A Grief Support Group for Children and Youth
RAINBOWS is a national support group program for children and youth, ages four through high school, who have experienced a significant loss in their lives. Forms of loss may include divorce, death, or abandonment.
The purpose of RAINBOWS is to help children move from grief to healing and to instill in them the realization that painful changes can become occasions for new beginnings and personal growth. The RAINBOWS program at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta is co-hosted by the Church’s Pastoral Care office and the Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta, located in the Smith Building behind the Church. All facilitators are trained by the RAINBOWS national office and submit to a background check to insure they are an appropriate match for the responsibilities they must assume as RAINBOWS group leaders.Register for RAINBOWS
RAINBOWS provides a group setting for children and parents to heal from loss. Individual therapy is not provided at meetings due to time constraints. If you are interested in individual counseling, please contact us. Please mention you are a RAINBOWS participant as group members may be eligible for reduced fee counseling.
RAINBOWS meets once a week for eight sessions. Currently, two semesters are held per year at our location. The first semester runs September through November and the second semester runs January through February. Please call our office for exact dates for the current school year.
Groups gather at 6:00pm for a simple supper provided by volunteers. At 6:40pm, groups are divided by age and meet for prepared and age-appropriate work from the RAINBOWS curriculum. At 7:45pm, the groups convene for dessert and then dismissed by 8:00pm. Parents are invited to stay and participate in the Parent’s Group. The Parent’s Group is led by a trained facilitator and provides parents the opportunity to support each other through the challenges of maintaining a sense of family in a time of transition.
